Butterbur Petasin: Standardized Petasites hybridus Extract
Butterbur Petasin is a CO2-extracted root preparation of Petasites hybridus, standardized to contain ≥15% petasin and isopetasin – the primary sesquiterpenes responsible for anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activity.
Unlike unregulated butterbur supplements, Butterbur Petasin is manufactured to be free of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), compounds associated with hepatotoxicity. It is the only butterbur extract used in peer-reviewed clinical trials in both adult and pediatric populations.
With over two decades of clinical use in North America and a robust safety profile, Butterbur Petasin serves as a rigorously tested, non-prescription preventive treatment for patients with episodic migraine. Its unique formulation enables targeted modulation of migraine-related inflammatory and neurogenic pathways.
